Planning a new fitness journey, whether it’s a new year’s pledge, making a change to your lifestyle or preparing for your summer holiday. Starting a new fitness regimen will bring an end to the chocolate, the junk food and lets you strive towards your goals.
But… After all the planning, resolutions are given up in no time and it’s little surprise that this is the case.
It’s actually really simple.
#1 – You’ve planned too much
Have you decided to set a super unrealistic goal? You might have done without even realising. Shred fat and build muscle? The more complicated you make it, the harder it will be. Sounds simple, right?
Science tells us to build muscle, you need to consume an adequate amount of protein and eat a surplus of calories. Simple!
To shred fat you need to consume an adequate amount of protein and eat a deficit of calories.
You can’t eat both a surplus and deficit of calories – so having ‘both goals’ could be one of the reasons you’re not achieving either goal.
It’s this simple.
Eat at a calorie deficit to burn fat.
Eat at a calorie surplus to build muscle.
#2 – You’re not sleeping well enough
Every plan you made, no matter how accurate, could be made or broken by your rest. So turn off your phone off an hour before sleep!
They always say TV is bad before bed, this is true but doesn’t replace that by browsing FB until you fall asleep. Put your phone away and disconnect from the world. It’s not just the screen light that keeps you up but you’ll also be processing information unnecessarily.
#3 – You’re still not being patient
TIME is the main factor in building muscle and burning fat. That is a fact. Achieving your goals is a result of being consistent over a period of time (and yes, it varies person-by-person).
Don’t expect to wake up after the workout of your life and look transformed. It’s never going to happen, sorry.
#4 – You’re not training legs
You all know the people in the gym who spend endless hours hammering the treadmill or the bike and always look the same. My one piece of advice to those guys is to hit the squat rack and start training legs. Leg day, as much as a lot of people hate it, is one of the best things you can do to start stripping fat and burning those calories. Not to mention, you’ll get those well-defined quads and appealing hamstrings.
Leg day will leave you drenched in sweat, burning tons of calories and strip the fat.
#5 – You’re not staying hydrated
NEVER underestimate how important it is to drink water. Not just keeping hydrated and fully fuelled but water gives you energy, helps your strength, overall health and metabolism.
Not to mention it helps enhance those fat-burning benefits.
